Italy: Milan and Italian Riviera

Ok, I finally sifted through our 1600+ pictures and finally feel ready for a trip breakdown. Kind of sad that it took me two months, but oh well.

It was funny, I spent two months micro-planning the trip, then didn't leave myself enough time at the end. Sarah was kind enough to take us to the airport, and I wound up packing in her car. Seriously. I had to leave a whole bag of stuff that didn't fit into my bags in her car. Then we thought we had plenty of time once we got to the airport, so we had a steak dinner at the new Terminal A Chophouse. Oops, we really didn't have that much time and wound up being the last two people to board. Which means they tried to gate check our bags. I worked really REALLY hard to pack only carry-on bags for our 2.5 week trip and let's just say I did not take to the idea of a gate check. They miraculously found space on the plane, which they sensed was in their own best interest. And yes, it would appear I need to work on my time management skills.

Then we circled Dallas for two hours due to weather. Thank heavens we got those bags on that plane, or else they would've missed the connection. We ran through DFW, managed to catch the connection. Once we landed in Heathrow the door broke so we sat on that plane for an extra two hours. We were planning to catch the Heathrow Express and take a double decker bus around London with our 7.5 hour layer, but ended up only having enough time to go through security and grab a bite to eat. Thank heavens for that long lay-over! Fellow passengers weren't so lucky, I thought we were going to see the emergency door deployed by an angry mob towards the end of that long ground wait.

With that rocky start, we finally arrived in Milan. We enjoyed a leisurely morning, spent some time in the Galleria and the Duomo (the 4th largest church in the world), then caught a train to Genoa.

My first Italian Prada store, in the Milan Galleria:
Because of the crappy dollar, I didn't actually purchase any Italian designer goods in Italy. Bizarrely enough, I was not saddened by this unexpected abstinence. Probably because I was busy buying cheap Italian wine.

Genoa was off the tourist beaten track and was a great way to start off the trip. We detoured here in order to use the free nights we had with Ultimate Escapes . Our room was gorgeous, the hotel was very conveniently located right across from a train station, and it was an authentic, non-touristy aclimation period. The weather wasn't great, so we went to a maritime musuem one morning that wound up being a lot of fun. Yes, Mike is a good sport. The harbor in Genoa:

We did an afternoon trip to Cinque Terre from Genoa, it was 1.5 hour by train, and it was absolutely gorgeous. That morning we woke to lots of rain, decided to do it the next day instead, then belatedly discovered the weather would only get worse. So we hopped on the train several hours later than we should have, but still managed to see most of the CT towns. Because it was pouring in the morning, there weren't very many tourists and the trail was closed. But it cleared up right after we finished a late lunch, so we went ahead and started the hike around 3:30. Since the trail was officially closed, there wasn't much traffic which was really nice.

We started off at the northern end, in Monterossa. The trail from Monterossa to Vernazza is the longest and most challenging, but since the weather was still cool from the rain it was pleasant

The easy starting off point in Monterossa.

Shot of what the trail looks like. It really varied, at some points it was fairly wide and flat, other times it was all stone steps, and then sometimes it was a teeny tiny dirt trail on the edge of a cliff. We're almost to Vernazza, looking back to our starting point Monterossa in the distance:
Looking down into Vernazza, our favorite of the three CT towns we visited:

The backside of Vernazza, as we resume hiking towards Corniglia:

The trail takes you up and down between the towns, just to get from the town of Corniglia to the train station is over 400 steps. All said and done, we did almost 2500 stair steps that day....the equivalent to more than 200 flights of stairs!! Needless to say, we had guilt-free gelato at every stop along the way. Before we started off towards Corniglia, I was told by a French lady with knee high hiking boots and ski poles in broken English that my shoes were too flimsy and that I would break my skinny ankles attempting the hike. Good thing we ignored her, it was not as rugged as non-Colorado folks would describe.

Midway between Vernazza and Corniglia, you can see Corniglia perched on the hill behind us. And now the sun is out, so the 500 m of vertical climbing and 11 km distance is showing.
We had an adventurous midnight train ride back to Genoa that we somehow survived, and were very happy we ventured the rain for what turned out to be a gorgeous day in the Cinque Terre.

Stay tuned for volume 2, Lake Garda and Venice. Or you can skip the dialogue and check out the album posted to the right.

Happy Birthday Jilly!

Yesterday we had a great time celebrating Jill's 30th b-day. We finished off a couple bottles of champagne at my place before heading over to Root Down for brunch and bottomless mimosas. Mike dropped us off and picked us up, don't worry. After we shut the place down, we lounged on the couches a bit before finishing off with some sushi and sake at Hapa. It was a wonderful and long overdue Sunday Fun-day. The group shot didn't turn out, but Sameera was in on the festivities too. Happy Birthday Jill!

Fire Drill

Saturday night I found a big bulge, like a tumor, on Marley's side. Needless to say, I freaked out. I think I broke my trimmers trying to shave him to get a better look, because Marley really has a whole lot of hair. I took him to the emergency hospital today, even though it was something my regular vet should've been able to do. But since my vet didn't diagnose Peekay correctly, who was riddled with cancer, I didn't feel like taking Marley there. I thought, hey, I'll take him to the hospital, they're competent. But I wasn't emotionally prepared for how hard returning the scene of Peekay's death would be. I was a sniffling basketcase, from making the appt through the examination and even while checking out. The vet was like, hey lady, it's just a lipoma fat deposit, he'll be fine. Yeah, but will I ever be?

One Big Year

Today is our one year anniersary. Kind of crazy, actually. It doesn't feel like a year has gone by, but at the same time we've gone through a major surgery, the death of a family member (Peekay), and two international vacations. So I guess we did go through a lot, but at the same time, damn, has it really been a year? I still have a bedroom dedicated to wedding reception decorations that I haven't managed clear out. One of these days. But not anytime soon, I have a lot of business travel over the next quarter, and getting Mike's pilot license and his house sold take priority. And by the way, besides the tragedies, it's been a really great year. Being married is good stuff.

And yes, we made it back from Italy in one piece. I'll post more details and pics soon!

p.s. - I'm not naked. This is the only picture I haven't shared yet. I just don't have the rest of my wedding pics yet....my fault, I just recently selected album pics and am still awaiting the album / digital photos.

The Knot Colorado

It came out a few months ago, but I was very over the wedding once it was done. I have nothing but fond memories of the day and I'm glad we did a traditional wedding, but I was just done. Now that almost a year has passed, it's time to finish. Select pictures for the wedding album. Check. Break down all the cardboard boxes I've been saving (I have a box hoarding problem. Seriously). Check. Clean out the wedding room and reclaim our spare bedroom. So wish I could check that off. I sold some stuff, gave some stuff away, made some serious progress (in case anyone gets the wrong idea, I'm talking about decorations here, not presents!!) and now only have ~20 silk tablecloths my mom and I sewed (ok, it was really just my mom). I am close to realizing my lifelong dream of having a closet with an island! But what do I do with these darn tablecloths? I need to take them to a professional cleaner and see how much they'd charge to press them. I hate ironing, and it turns out that it takes me an hour to iron just one. That's not going to work for me.

Since I'm tackling the subject, I figured I might as well post the article. This is the online version, but I'm not feeling well enough to get off the couch and scan the print version. Same content, half of it incorrect, either way. We did actually have some good photos of the day, my photographer and I were both baffled by their photo selection. And the write up is pretty cheesy. Maybe I'll scan it later on tonight. But I probably won't, so Click here!

And in case you were wondering, I plan to continue posting until Peekay is moved off the home page. It makes me sad, that's why I've been staying away lately.

College Flashback

Yesterday I was in Portland, Oregon. We had a day of customer training lined up, lots of folks traveled in from a few states to be there. Since most people were staying at the hotel, we hosted a dinner in the restaurant across the parking lot. Our work was done, we didn't have to drive anywhere, and so we were all drinking. Well, I haven't been drinking much lately. I spread 5 glasses of wine over a 5 hour time period so I really didn't think I was being that bad.

Wrong.

Getting up at 5:30 am to catch my flight sucked. Puking on the side of Pena Blvd on the way home sucked even more. Haven't pulled that particular stunt in 8 years now.

I think I preferred not drinking. But at the same time, I sincerely hope I will be able to stomach red wine by the time Italy rolls around. It would sad to be in Italy and still be repulsed by the thought of a glass of wine.

Eight great years

Yesterday was the 8th anniversay of my adoption of Peekay. Sadly, we didn't get to celebrate this with him. In a rather tragic turn of events that I try not to think about, Peekay died last Thursday. I'm really sad, though Lisa is doing her best to cheer me up. He was a great dog, I miss him so much. So does Marley. We're both a little depressed.

Drumroll please...

We got Enzo's genetic report back. It's rather dull, actually. He's a black lab / golden retriever mix....exactly what I wanted, and exactly what we thought he was when we adopted him. But then he started displaying some not-necessarily retriever characteristics, which got us wondering. And we kept running into Weimaraner / German Shepherd mixes that looked identical to him. I'm happy that's he's the mix I sought, but after the anticipation it was a bit anti-climatic.

The entire dog family...yes our hands are full. That's a Qwest line in the background, we originally called Comcast who booked the service call about two weeks out, only to find out it was Qwest. It was also hanging down in the alley, and one of the neighbors called Xcel. The joys of overhead lines. Buried cables are one thing I miss about living in the 'burbs.

Happy Birthday, Lisa!

Happy 3-oh Lisa! I wish I could be there to give you a big hug and share some cocktails. I miss hearing your laugh, which I hope you do lots of today. Have the best day ever, you deserve it! Can't wait to see you in July...

We're going to Italy!!!!!

We have been talking about going to Italy in October for a one-year anniversary trip, but I hadn't done anything to make that a reality. But on Sunday my Dad gifted us a few nights from their vacation club because they had nights that were going to expire. Come to find out, they needed to be booked within the week and travel within 120 days. Oh wait, their only property in Italy was completely booked within 120 days, just a single 3 day booking under tentative reservations. Turns out you can challenge tentative reservations, we did, the original guests canceled, and now it's ours!!! YAY!!!! I was trying not to get my hopes up over the past few days bc I didn't think they'd cancel and I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a picture of the house. This is not a sample, look how pretty Tuscany is sort of picture...this is the house. 20 acres and a private pool included.

Now we need to figure out the rest of the trip, if you've been to Italy I'd love to hear your feedback. Now I have to go pack for Vegas, my flights leaves first thing in the morning. I'm glad the house is settled, so I don't have to plan one trip while on another. But I must admit it would be typical of me. =)

Help with VEGAS! dining agenda

I am so excited for the upcoming VEGAS! trip. I type it like that because that is how it sounds in my mind. To be honest, I'm a little too excited and find myself looking up VEGAS! activities instead of working. But as hard as I've been working lately, I deserve a little internet time.

I've never actually prepared for a Vegas trip before. Well, not counting Leah's long ago wedding...Ivory and I did some prep work then because it was our first time. I usually am with larger groups, be it friends or customers, and just can't dictate what I want to do....from hotels to dining to day activities (for those I've gone to Vegas with, I had a great time, I'm not complaining!).

But now I get to do some trip planning! Yay! I agonized over hotel selections (went with the Venetian, because I wanted to stay somewhere new, Caesar's was too expensive and I feared Wynn would be too stuffy...plus I read up on tipping desk clerks for upgrades and Venetian has a high success rate). I can't even think of an appropriate word for what I'm doing over our dining agenda. Here's the tentative plans, please chime in if you have ideas.

Thursday - lounge at Mandalay day. I will eat lunch at my favorite little Mexican joint by the convention center, Border Grill. They have chips like Lime but better entrees. Thursday night is Craftsteak for Kathryn's b-day dinner. Yummy!

Friday - MGM pool day. I imagine we'll grab something quick for lunch at MGM pool, followed by Social Club (sushi) with the entire group.

Saturday is when the deliberations kick in. We're doing a special dinner on Saturday night before our 9:30 Phantom show, after much deliberation I made a reservation at Alex in the Wynn. In order to get their "recession" prix fixe menu you have to order by 7...so it's a 6:30 reservation but we can be 15 minutes late. That said, can we manage three large meals in one day?? I really want to go to Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast on Saturday bc they have a great patio with a view of the Bellagio fountains and the strip. But I want their steak frites. So steak frites for breakfast, followed by a burger at Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay's joint in Caesar's) followed by a multi-course dinner at 7?? It might be more than even I can manage.

The other complication is that I really want to try Bouchon (from Thomas Keller of French Laundry). Also French, but open for breakfast. So Bouchon for breakfast on Sunday, and Lotus of Siam (off strip Thai) before we head to the airport. We can go off strip on Sunday because we'll have a car because...wait for it....we're going to Hoover Damn!!!! I'm very excited for that as well. Wow, that was a very long rambling post, almost entirely dedicated to food. Does blogger offer the "continue reading" feature like Drea's blog has? Pretty sure not everyone cares about my dining extravaganza angst.

Yummy Smoothie Recipe

Yes, two posts in one day. For once I'm not swamped at work (mind you, there's plenty to do, I just don't feel like doing it). Sarah joined Mike and I for an outing to Golden for On the Border. Sadly the Denver location closed, but it's always nice visiting G-town. Sarah joined us for ice cream after dinner (Breyer's reduced-fat strawberry cheesecake is my new favorite food, sadly I'll have to ban it from my kitchen because I like it too much) and we were talking about smoothies. Since I love the french toast recipe that Katie shared, I figured I could return the favor. Assuming anyone likes smoothies as much as me.

1 orange (I just cut into quarters and cut out the fleshy part)
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1 serving Silken lite tofu
1/2 cup Dannon light n fit French Vanilla Yogurt
Ocean Spray light cranberry juice to consistency preference
Ice if needed

Cal = 255, Fat = 1 g (0 sat), carb = 52, Fib = 7, sug = 36, prot = 11

I think is the second best smoothie ever, right after Jamba Juice Caribbean Passion. When I'm being more mindful of my diet, I substitute one scoop french vanilla whey protein powder for the tofu, and 0% Greek yogurt for the Dannon (both have more protein than the original version). The modification shifts nutritional content to Cal = 334, Fat = 2g, Cab = 48g, Fiber = 7g, Sugar = 39 g, Protein = 34g. Since it has more calories that may seem weird, but the only way I can lose weight is by consuming tons of protein. And sadly cutting all carbs, so the smoothie ultimately doesn't acheive that goal, but oh well

Why business travel does not suck

Thursday morning I flew out to LA. As I always do when my flight is on a 777, I upgraded with miles. Business class on a 777 is so nice. Yes I still wound up next to an obese person (who needed assistance from 4 people to get her seat upright after it broke when she tried to recline), but since our seats were 6" apart she could not invade my space. thank heavens.

Our afternoon appointment canceled last minute, so Kyle and I worked from our hotel. Poolside. This cheesy camera phone doesn't do it justice. Our cabana had power for the overhead fans and thus our laptops. Palm trees were directly across, but all I could get was trunks from where I was sitting. The weather was perfect.

I love dining out. And the experience is so much better when someone else pays for it. From inventive sushi in LA to top-of-skyscraper steakhouse dining in Portland, this might be one of the best perks of my job.

Not only does business travel cut down on my expenses during the week, just three trips to the airport each month covers all of my gas. And then I get to use all of my miles to visit friends!

I might not always enjoy traveling as often as I do right now, but for the time being....I LOVE it!

Thanks for everyone who sent positive thoughts my way for the big meeting last week. It was a strange experience, to say the least. The top exec was about 15 minutes late, and spent the first five minutes venting on the director that scheduled the call. We jumped around the slideck, discussing items/slides completely out of order, and then ran out of time. But our end goal was achieved, so I guess it can be considered a success. If I ever have another opportunity like this in the future, I will definitely prepare differently.

Send me your positive thoughts!

I'm not sure if there's anyone out there still checking our blog, it's been so long since I posted. I've been completely swamped at work, in my spare time the last thing I want to do is spend more time in front of my computer. Instead of the internet in my limited spare time, I decided to renovate our yard.....more details/pictures to come.

So last month I volunteered for a project at work, it's been a great opportunity to gain visibility outside of my organization. I have been working with all of the sales teams that support Cable companies in the US, gathering forecast and market share info to accelerate/prevent delay of the development of a critical piece of hardware.

Today is the culmination of all that work, I will be presenting to eight Cisco VPs. Several of whom report directly to our CEO John Chambers.

This is crazy. I'm trying not to freak out. I present to my customer's VPs and that is all fine and dandy, but Cisco is just different. People happily leave CEO and VP positions at other companies to become directors at Cisco, it happens all the time. Presenting to these people is way, way, WAY outside of my pay grade.

Please please please send me prayers and positive thoughts, I need to appear about 10 times smarter and more polished than I actually am. YIKES!

p.s. - a BIG congratulations to Steve and Laura Saba on the birth of their beautiful new baby girl, Zoe Fran Saba. Born Friday 5/22 at 12:47 am, she weighed in at 7 lbs 11 0z, measuring 19" long. Can't wait to meet her!

Skating for Myles

Last night Mike and I went to a fundraiser for Myles Krick, a little boy with a malignant brain tumor. I went along for the good cause, but wound up having a great time. The event started off with an open skate, dinner of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, then a game between casually formed teams of RMGCSA vs. Fire/Police. Mike's a member of the Rocky Mountain Golf Course Superintendent Association, as is Myles father. I was amazed at the turnout, the place was packed. Usually watching Mike play hockey is a cold (VERY cold) and lonely event, but last night I met a delightful mother of four boys that kept me company. And if I hadn't met her, I wouldn't know that number 8 on the Fire/Police team was a 73 year old man named Johny Lightning. I hope Mike is still well enough to play hockey in his seventies.

It was really inspiring to see how many people turned out to help this little boy. If you're feeling generous today, you can make a donation at his webpage, myleskrick.com

I wish I had a picture of Mike in his hockey gear, but he took the camera with him when he left for the locker room. Shucks.

Nicki's Bachelorette Party!

Nicki's last night out as a single gal was a fun one. We started off with dinner at 8 Rivers for some yummy Caribbean food (I'll be going back there, and soon!). We wandered across the street to Rio, then had a dance party with ourselves at 24Karat, before finally heading over to Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret. The burlesque show was a lot of fun and Nicki outshone the other bachelor/bachelorettes up on the stage for the guest bit. Just click on the slideshow below to access all my pictures of the night. The last few crack me up, I guess I forgot how to take a picture right around the same time I forgot the rest of the night. Weee!

Water Dog

Looks like we're going to have to invest in a parks pass this year, because we have a water loving dog on our hands. Wish I could edit this down, but I don't have time to figure out how!

The finished product was a very wet Enzo:

After a leisurely day of obedience school, the dog park, cupcake making at Ivory's house (HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMA!), and reading in the glorious Colorado sun (if you haven't read Outlander, I recommend it), it's time to hop in the shower and get ready for some fun. Tonight is Nicki's bachelorette party and I'm sure we'll have a great time. Hopefully tomorrow's hangover will not be too brutal, I'm going to try to remember to drink water. Happy Saturday!

Full Circle

A couple weekends ago - I know, I am so bad at keeping up - we met Ivory and Jamie for Denver Restaurant Week at Oceanaire. It turned out to be our favorite dinner of the week and it wasn't just due to the fun company. I you've never been there, I highly recommend it. The retro space was upscale yet very comfortable, the service was some of the best I can recall, and the food divine. After living in North Carolina for a year, I know what shrimp and grits should taste like and they nailed it. My favorite part was when the executive chef stopped at our table to check on the food....right while Ivory was administering the salt. They have the same sea salt I use at home, that enormous blue container, so it surely did not go unnoticed. Ivory was sheepish, but the chef didn't even blink, which earned another star in my book. I hate being scolded about salt overuse.

Then we went to P.S. Lounge and played @sshole the rest of the night. This evening was an almost perfect recreation of the night two years ago when Ivory and Jamie first met Mike. I wasn't sure about him at that point, but how well he got along with Ivory and Jamie that first evening was a big push in his favor.

Flash forward to today, and look how much has changed. Ivory and Jamie have a beautiful daughter and Mike and I are married. It sure doesn't take long. Just ask Drea, her life did a full 180 in less than six months! So when Mike and I went out to brunch with a certain blond friend the next day and saw how smitten she and her date were, I couldn't help but think hhhmmmm.

For the final DRW recap, here's the ranking:
1 - Oceanaire. 2 - Gabriel's. 3 - Solera. 4 - Elway's Downtown. 5 - Indulge. (very nice, cozy French place. great food, the meals were simply better at the top ranking restaurants) 6 - Restaurant Kevin Taylor (same menu as last year, hence the downgrade). 7 - Opus. 8 - Red Square. I won't go into review details, since DRW is long past and they will be of little value. And now we have to eat at home for all of March, because while we got the stuffed the wallet was starved.

February was Fun

Here I am, doing another recap of last month. I'm hoping to develop better blogging skills one day, but in the meantime I hope my friends will bear with my too-long posts.

February was action packed and so much fun. Mike and I were both traveling for business the first week, which meant we had to farm out the dogs. Two to Cook's house, Fly to Mike's co-worker, the puppy to the kennel. Mike was freezing in New Orleans, I was sunning in LA. Mike didn't get back until Saturday, so I had the house to myself a couple of days. Lots of cleaning, the house finally looks like grown-ups live here.

Speaking of grown-ups, I turned 30! Mike planned a lovely Valentine's Day / Birthday dinner and surprised me with a new camera...my 9 year old point and shoot is starting to show its age. My mom sent some money, so we decided to pony up the difference and upgrade to a real camera. I don't know how to use it well yet, but I am really looking forward to playing around with it and learning how to take good pictures. Tanya has inspired this, I hope to take pictures half as good as hers sometime soon. Mike took this great Marley action shot:

Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate at the joint b-day party! I had such a great time, it was wonderful to catch up with folks I don't see often. It's amazing to me how many old college friends are still in Denver with whom I rarely cross paths. It's one of my goals to have more large-scale social gatherings this spring/summer. And to take more pictures when I do go out. Turns out I was too busy talking to take pictures at the party.

Last weekend was Nicki's bridal shower, such a special day and a great time to boot. Nicki and I were housemates for several years during college and took some outrageous Caribbean trips together, it's funny to look back a decade and see how far we've come. It's also pretty crazy that we're marrying friends! Who would've guessed. At the end of March Nicki's going to marry a great guy who I know will make her very happy. Cheers!
It was also the first birthday celebration of Lauryn Wilkey, Mike's close friends' daughter. She's a cutie, wish I could've been there. Mike delivered birthday wishes on my behalf, then we met up at the DU hockey game. I honestly think DU hockey games are more fun than the Avs...every seat is great, parking is way easier, and the beer is cheaper. It was also one of our first dates, so I might be biased.

My favorite week of the year

That's right, it is Denver Restaurant Week! Yippee. We were supposed to cut back this year, but the stars aligned and I will not be doing any business travel this week. And I cashed in all my OpenTable points to cover a couple dinners. At least in theory, problem is I can't resist trying out the wine as well. Here's the lineup:

Red Square with Sarah, Laura, Ivory, Jill, Barry & Jess, Jill and Shane. I was not impressed, but we had a large group and it was the best I could manage on the busiest night of the week. At least the vodka was great
Elway's Downtown with Cook. It was even better than the Cherry Creek location, which I'm fond of
Opus It was nice, but not as nice as they think it is...their everyday pricing is astronomical. No need to drive to Littleton when Fruition is a few blocks away and half the price
Gabriel's
Restaurant Kevin Taylor
Oceanaire with Ivory and Jamie.

My goal this year was to try all new restaurants, the only exception being Restaurant Kevin Taylor. It is the exception because I think RKT is the best value during restaurant week. They don't treat you like DR weekers, they don't pick the cheapest things off their menu (Opus = guilty), and last year we got a coupon for another $52.80 meal anytime during 2008.

In case you haven't made any DRW reservations, there is still time! Most of the restaurants extended the special through Friday March 6, I'm being a good girl and only made one more reservation. Only because the other three places I really wanted to hit didn't extend the special. Mike is thanking heaven for that.

Happy Birthday Sarah!

Can't wait to celebrate with you tonight! I also vote for a continuation....Sunday brunch? And in the event you meet a cute guy tonight and want to seduce him with your awesome caps skills, I have a case of Key light at my house. Hope your day is fabulous.

My Favorite Article Ever

I was cleaning my office and came across the print version of this article. Thank heavens, the Onion archives their articles. I now present a column that could've been written by my dog Marley.*

I'm Not Proud Of Some Of The Things I've Done

By Tuffy
Excerpted From The Confessions Of St. Tuffy
September 18, 2002 | Issue 38•34

Tuffy

Can it be true that my years in this world already number 12? Though mine is but a dog's life, I have always tried to live it well. Early on, I made it my mission to explore the neighborhood beyond my own yard, to appreciate nature and its many wonderful smells. I've thirsted for knowledge, learning in excess of 10 tricks and committing to memory the location of every rabbit hole within a quarter mile. I have minded to comport myself with dignity, keeping my coat shiny and clean through a daily regimen of rigorous licking.

But, alas, I am not proud of some of the things I have done. I have willfully disobeyed orders. I have, at times, been too quick to bark, and I have whimpered needlessly. I have gnawed upon things I never should have gnawed. Yes, I have even bitten others in anger. Not often, and only when I felt I had to, but now I see that turning to the tooth never solves anything.

I have been a bad boy.

What springs to mind now, though it pains me to recall, is the garbage-can incident. My owner had been gone for hours. I was restless. Perhaps I was even a little angry over being left alone. At any rate, I nudged the kitchen-cupboard door open and overturned the garbage can. I was drunk with the ecstasy of my ill-gotten power and, suddenly, there was garbage everywhere. As if some evil force had taken hold of me, I chewed apart an empty bacon package right on top of the good blue couch. When I heard the car pull into the garage, it was as if I had awakened from a dream. Oh, the shame! I retreated to the basement and cowered next to the dryer in the hopes of evading the vigorous shoe-whacking I knew I richly deserved.

This is not my only transgression. My lust for table food has driven me to commit many a gluttonous act. There was the time I ate two pounds of raw hamburger meat left to thaw on top of the basement deep freeze. That was wrong. Worse still was the time I chewed right through that wrapped box under the Christmas tree to get at the cheese-and-sausage party-pak that lay inside. At the time, I viewed it as a bold and wholly justified act of defiance—I was weary of Science Diet and felt deserving of more treats. But in my heart I knew. I knew.

It has always been a battle to suppress the demon urges welling up inside me. Even as I slid from my mother's womb into the cardboard box in the tool shed, I was already not without sin. Yea, I sucked greedily at my mother's teat, trampling my six brothers and sisters in my milklust. I burdened my master with my youthful exuberance, repeatedly scampering out of the box and forcing him to chase me down. I used my tender age as an excuse to live with abandon, jumping on anyone, nipping wantonly, licking those who did not want to be licked. I arrogantly believed I had no need to learn the word "down."

Greater still were the sins committed upon reaching adulthood, for they could not be dismissed as the indiscretions of youth. At nine months, I knew full well when to sit, when to stay, which chairs were off limits, and yet I still broke the House Rules. I drank from the toilet. I snatched the choicest-smelling items from the laundry basket. Oh, the things upon which I chewed! Belts, shoes, newspapers, telephone cords, chair legs, and, one terrible day, the video-game controller. These foul acts—all the work of this bewhiskered mouth!

I also regret my indolence. My purpose in life is to protect my master's home, yet all too often I let sloth chase this sense of duty from me. So many afternoons I spent stretched out on the sunlit floor, my eyes blinking heavily until I drifted off into dreams of giant rawhide strips and bouncing rubber balls. Then, the knock of the UPS man or the thud of the evening paper on the steps would jolt me awake, the harsh sound castigating me for my negligence.

If only it were true that my only sin was that of omission! No, the abuse of free will has led me to commit the most vulgar of deeds. Repeatedly, I have succumbed to temptations of the flesh. There was no spaniel, no beagle-lab mix I did not see as my rightful property, with which I was free to have my way. Last summer, in my most depraved moment of carnality, only the blast of water from a cold hose was sufficient to separate me from my shameful congress with Duchess, the West Highland terrier next door.

In these dozen years, I have experienced misery—the ear infection, my head getting slammed in the car door, the time I walked through that wet tar—but nothing equals the pain I feel when I think of the shameful disobedience I have shown my master.

O, Tyler Gregory, my benevolent keeper, my guide and my provider—you have been nothing but generous to me in spite of my hateful nature. You have loved me unconditionally, but without undue passion. You have corrected my errant ways, but with a gentle hand. You have been strong, but you have been fair.

It sickens me to look upon these four paws knowing they have committed such misdeeds in the face of your loving grace. I would gladly cut them off in penance—lay them across the very same railroad tracks that took the tail of the cat next door. But I know that such an act would only cause you pain, so true and selfless is your love for me.

My beloved master, great and giving one, my sole purpose on this Earth is but to follow at your heels, to come when you call. I beg not for a snack treat, but for something far sweeter and more satisfying: your forgiveness.

I did not ask for a new haircut

But I got one. My conversation with my hair stylist last weekend went something like this:

Rocco: So, did you finally get married? I need to cut off all of this hair.
Me: Yes! No! Have you seen how fat I've gotten? I can't have short hair with a face this round!
Rocc: Oh, good point. Didn't notice that at first. *sigh* Start jogging, we'll cut it off next time.
Me: Deal.

Apparently he and I have different opinions of short. I really like Rocco and we tend to talk a lot during the appointment. And he also turns me away from the mirror so you don't see the end results until he is completely done. Obviously I knew he was cutting bangs, but he cuts bangs every session and every day I just swoop them to the side and forget they exist. Not this time.

Yes, this is a bad picture. I don't have on eye makeup and I'm making a funny face. But my face is not the point, it's the hair. Anyone who knows me knows that I don't use a flat iron. Nor do I use a hair dryer very often. I was scared. These bangs don't swoop to the side.

Early Tuesday morning I have to dry my new hair. Since I'm not a morning person and I needed to catch an 8 am flight, not a lot of effort was put into attempt number one. It's that length that hits your shoulder and flips out. I looked like a newscaster. My account manager, whom I travel with almost every week, walked right past me at the airport. Yikes. Fortunately, attempt number two, which really shouldn't be called an attempt since I forgot to pack my hair brushes and just let it air dry, turned out better. I almost like it!
At the very least, I am relieved that I can let it air dry. And as you can see by the clutter in this picture, my recent travels have left my house in a state of disarray. I plan to clean all weekend. Right after I catch a movie (and popcorn! yum!!) with Ivory. And hopefully squeeze in some yoga and brunch with Jilly on Sunday. I'm very much looking forward to both.

Bad Dogs.

We've had an expensive week. Last Sunday, we arrived home after our trip to Chicago tired and ready to sack out on the couch. That was not to be. Our cute puppy promptly puked his dinner on the living room rug. Hmm, we thought, he must have eaten his dinner too fast. We gave him a little more, metering the portion to him. He puked that up 5 minutes later. Then he threw up the water he drank. Finally, when void of food and water, he started throwing up little black pieces of plastic. Oh no, I think, flashing back to Marley's $4500 surgery to remove a ball from his small intestine. After some investigation, turns out Enzo had been in his crate since his babysitters left at noon. With a tennis ball.

When we got home at 6:30 pm the only sign of the tennis ball was a small scrap of fuzz. Several hours and hundreds of dollars later, we head back home with these pictures:

The white snake in these x-rays is a chewed up tennis ball in our puppy's colon. Fortunately he passed all the rubber and fuzz without requiring surgery. Enzo is fine.

Flash forward to yesterday. We leave the house at 9:15 am for puppy kindergarten. After that session and a leisurely trip through Petsmart, we walk in the house at 11:45 am to find a chewed up, empty Rimadyl bottle on the floor. Rimadyl is Peekay's anti-inflammatory drug for his arthritis. It tastes good. Marley is always mad that he doesn't get one. So he climbed on the counter, bypassing three separate bags of harmless, yummy dog treats, to get at that red bottle. Turns out that Rimadyl in high doses causes gastric bleeding, liver and/or kidney failure and is potentially fatal. Labs are particularly sensitive to the drug.

Since we didn't know whether or not Fly and Peekay got a piece of the action, we had to take all three in to get their stomachs pumped. Marley was the lone culprit, and I spent a weepy afernoon at the emergency clinic. Though he's still being monitored and on IV fluids, he should be fine and we're hoping he gets discharged tonight. I must admit, spending a couple hours fearing your dog is going to die softens the blow of the vet bill. Somewhat.

So. Much. Fun.

Even though Chicago is crazy cold, it is such a fun city. I am so happy that Josh and Drea welcomed us at their wedding celebration, it was truly an amazing evening. I thought I was doing a decent job taking snapshots, but it turns out I was wrong. I don't have a picture that captures how stunningly beautiful Drea looked, how handsome and happy Josh was, how perfectly the space was decked out. Thank heavens for professional photographers, right? Be sure to check out Josh and Drea's blogs for good pictures. Here you will find funny pictures:

Drea and Josh's well-executed first dance, I guess I failed to see the tree blocking my view?

My new friends Frannie and Maria from LA. Note, self portrait does not work well with tall folks
Me at the end of the night:
Drea at the end of the night:

Yeah, we all had fun. Please be sure to check out other folks' pictures to see how stunning Drea looked when she wasn't being molested.

Our new pastime

After all the dog walking and yard cleaning, that is (walking the dogs is a near full-time thing now that Peekay is too old to keep up and the puppy is too young to behave). The old SciFi series Firefly. Seriously. Netflix recommended it as 5 stars, but it sat way at the bottom of my queue for a few years because, come on, it's a SciFi original series. But I was in Portland a couple weeks ago with my customers and the entire dinner conversation revolved around this T.V. show. So I bumped it up on the queue, where it then sat in our house for a month because of a cheesy opening space war scene. But once we finally got past that first scene, we were hooked! If you're looking for a new show to watch on DVD, give Firefly a chance. We love it.

I'm such a slacker

I'm really going to try to avoid this in the future, the huge post capturing highlights of the month. But this month has been a bit of challenge. Of the 6 days I've spent at home in the past 4 weeks, I've been sick for 5 of them. Did I mention I've been traveling? Mike and I got a free week stay at any Rock Resort courtesy of the wedding extravaganza. Since St Lucia was out of budget (airfare was not included) and we live in Colorado, we opted for the Snake River Resort in Jackson Hole. When we were packing our bags on Saturday night, the temp in Jackson WY was -32 degrees. That's right, 32 degrees BELOW zero. It was an icy drive through Wyoming. Once we got there we had so much fun, it truly was like a second honeymoon. We lounged around in the room. We skied. Well, Mike skied and I read. I was saving my energy for Vegas. We tried out yummy new restaurants and enjoyed some beers in the Cowboy bar. All in all, a great trip.

Ah, the timed portrait from the trash can. Always a classic.

We came home, I exchanged long underwear and wool socks for push-up bras and patent stilletos, then hopped a flight to Vegas. We had so much celebrating Drea's bachelorette party. I finally got to meet Gina, spend some quality time with Drea, Jill and Katie. Lots of gambling, drinking, and laughing....everything a trip to Vegas should include. I don't have a ton of pictures, Drea's camera saw most of the action, but I love this picture of Jill trying to eat her nutella crepe. You can't see it, but she even has nutella in her hair.

And then guess what? I came home, exchanged my skinny pants and hot dresses for trousers and blazers. DIA, my home away from home. At least my Monday morning trip took me to Newport Beach California. Though it's always a challenge dressing myself when I'm starting the morning in the 20s and ending the day in 85 degree weather. Can't complain, we had a lovely customer dinner at Javier's in Crystal Cove overlooking the ocean, rumor had it the Real Wives of the OC showed up after we left.

And last but not least, we're loving our new BIG baby.
